Abuja, city, capital of Nigeria. It is located in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT; created in 1976) in the central part of Nigeria. In terms of distance, the city is approximately 300 miles (480 km) north of Lagos, the former capital (up until 1991).

During the period 2000 to 2010, Abuja grew by 139.7%, making it the fastest-growing city in the world. In 2015, the city experienced an annual growth rate of at least 35%, maintaining its position as the fastest-growing city on the African continent.

In addition to being one of Africa’s richest cities, Abuja is one of the few purpose-built capitals. The capital of Nigeria, Abuja, is the administrative and political center of the country. As a result of Nigeria’s geopolitical influence in the region, it is also an important capital on the African continent.
